Animal hair allergy, also known as animal allergy or pet allergy, is a very common type of allergy.

The allergy develops in people who have increased sensitivity to proteins found in the saliva, urine, fur, or dander of domestic animals such as cats, dogs, hamsters, rabbits, etc.

When a person suffering from animal hair allergy is near an animal or comes into contact with its fur, the reaction appears as various symptoms, including nasal congestion, sneezing, coughing, itchy or watery eyes, skin itching, rashes or redness, and in some people even worsening of asthma.

    Symptoms of animal allergy

Symptoms of animal allergy depend on the individual and the type of animal they react to.
The most common symptoms of animal allergy are:

    • Nasal symptoms: sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, itching and burning in the nose, sensation of mucus in the throat.
    • Eye symptoms: itchy and red eyes, tearing, swelling around the eyes.
    • Skin symptoms: itching, redness, rashes, skin swelling, eczema, especially in areas of contact with the animal.
    • Respiratory symptoms: difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath.
    • Asthma symptoms: worsening of asthma symptoms such as choking sensation, wheezing, and chest tightness.
    • General symptoms: fatigue, irritability, headache.

In cases of animal allergy, symptoms may appear shortly after contact with the animal or develop gradually with prolonged exposure. It is important to note that symptoms of animal allergy may resemble other allergic conditions or diseases, therefore consultation with an allergist is recommended for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

    Diagnosis of animal allergy

Diagnosis of animal allergy usually includes the following steps:

    • Medical examination and medical history review: The doctor will talk with you about your symptoms, allergy history, and possible exposure to animals.
    • Skin tests: One of the common diagnostic methods is skin testing. Small amounts of various allergens, including animal extracts, are applied to your skin, usually on the forearm. The doctor then evaluates the skin reaction to determine what you are allergic to.
    • Blood tests: Another diagnostic method is a blood test for IgE antibodies, which may be associated with allergic reactions to animals. Blood is analyzed to determine antibody levels and reactivity to specific allergens.
    • Elimination test: The doctor may recommend temporarily avoiding contact with animals to see whether symptoms improve.

After completing all necessary tests and obtaining results, the doctor can make an accurate diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment and preventive measures for managing animal allergy.

    • Avoiding contact with animals: This includes avoiding direct contact with animals, removing carpets, frequent cleaning of the home, using air purifiers, and creating “safe zones” in the home where animals are not allowed.
    • Medication treatment: The doctor may recommend antihistamines to reduce symptoms such as itching and runny nose. In some cases, corticosteroids or other medications may be prescribed for more severe symptoms.
    • Symptomatic treatment: Anti-itch creams or lotions for skin symptoms, nasal sprays or drops for nasal congestion, and other supportive treatments may be recommended.
    • Body cleansing program: normalization of gastrointestinal function and metabolism.
    • Antiparasitic therapy: contact with animals may be associated with parasitic infections, which can contribute to allergic reactions.
    • Outpatient or inpatient cleansing program (5–10 days): detoxification helps eliminate toxins, restore metabolism, support weight loss, and improve function of the intestines, liver, gallbladder, lymphatic and circulatory systems.
    • Examinations: abdominal ultrasound, laboratory tests, and full body assessment using the Medical Expert Complex system.
    • Detox program: accommodation, nutrition, herbal teas, massages, ozonated water, rectal oxygen-ozone insufflation, ear insufflation, cleansing enemas, gallbladder and liver drainage (tubage), intestinal cleansing (orthograde method).
    • Ozone therapy: intravenous therapy, rectal insufflation, upper airway sanitation with oxygen-ozone mixture, ozonated water intake, ozonated oil.
    • Antiparasitic programs
    • Pressotherapy: lymphatic system cleansing.
    • Visceral massage: internal organ massage that improves metabolism, reduces intestinal spasms, removes mucus and parasites, supports liver, gallbladder, and pelvic organs, and helps reduce visceral fat.
    • Spinal traction using the “Ormed Professional” device
    • Photon therapy
    • Duodenal gallbladder drainage

    Worm infection from animals

Worm infections from animals are very common. Many patients who visit the Medical Center “Alternative” have parasitic infections if they keep pets at home.

How humans become infected with worms
    • Direct contact: If you have pets, especially dogs or cats, and they are infected with worms, you can become infected if proper hygiene is not followed after contact. For example, not washing hands after petting an animal or cleaning its litter box increases the risk.
    • Contaminated surfaces: If animals have access to contaminated areas (such as areas with feces), infection can occur through contact with contaminated surfaces.
    • Food products: Eating undercooked or contaminated food containing worm eggs can also lead to infection.

To prevent worm infection from animals, the following precautions should be followed:

    • Wash hands regularly with soap and water after contact with animals or their environment.
    • Keep your home and animal living areas clean.
    • Clean litter boxes regularly.
    • Ensure regular veterinary care and deworming of pets.
    • Consume meat or fish only after proper heat treatment.

It is important to consult an allergist or immunologist for personalized treatment recommendations based on your condition and severity of animal allergy.

    How animal allergy develops

Animal allergy develops as a result of an abnormal immune system reaction to proteins found in animal secretions. When a sensitive person comes into contact with these proteins (saliva, urine, fur, feathers), the immune system treats them as harmful substances and triggers an allergic response.

The process of allergic reaction to animals occurs as follows:

    • A person with animal allergy comes into contact with allergens (animal proteins) present in air, surfaces, fur, or feathers.
    • The immune system recognizes the allergen as a threat and produces IgE antibodies against it.
    • IgE antibodies bind to mast cells containing histamine and other inflammatory mediators.
    • Upon repeated exposure, mast cells are activated and release histamine and other mediators.
    • The release of histamine leads to symptoms such as itching, redness, runny nose, nasal congestion, coughing, and others.

It is important to note that sensitivity levels vary between individuals. Some people may have severe reactions even with minimal exposure, while others may experience mild symptoms or none at all.
